Comment: Now we leave Penn State campus and head out for the countryside on our way to my parents' house. From the hill crest on Whitehall Rd. there is a great view of Mt. Nittany. This mountain is the inspiration for local legends and contains a very popular hiking trail for a view of the town.
* And here is the famous Nittany Lion statue, a shrine to university pride and heritage. * 612 x 408 * (37KB)

* This is the Palmer Museum of art, a public gallery on campus. Note the two gigantic lion paws adorning the entrance! * 612 x 408 * (26KB)

* The University Creamery! Home to some of the best ice cream in the world. * 612 x 408 * (42KB)

* Our beloved Beaver Stadium, home of our nationally recognized football team, the Nittany Lions. Sadly, having been inside this massive stadium made my experience inside the Roman Colloseum rather disappointing - Beaver Stadium is about 3 times larger! It was designed to hold approximately 100,000 people - roughly the same figure as the population of State College - and is usually full on game days. * 612 x 408 * (23KB)

* The Bryce Jordan Center, our indoor sports facility and venue for major performing artists. I got to see Bush and Moby perform live here, but I've missed more good bands than I've seen! Note Mt. Nittany in the background. * 612 x 408 * (23KB)

* See the billboard in the trees? Where this road now lies used to be a baseball field, one that I played on for seven years in my childhood. Gill Field, I miss you. * 612 x 408 * (27KB)

* This is a gigantic gas station/convenience store located on the corner of College Ave. & Whitehall Rd. When it was built, it was the largest Uni-Mart in the entire country. Along with gas and snacks, it houses a bagel shop, a Burger King, a Chinese restaurant, a postal center, and a car wash. Unfortunately, it was built over top of a historic landmark. Oops, oh well.... * 612 x 408 * (24KB)

* Across the street from the Uni-Mart is Harner Farm, a great local food store. * 612 x 408 * (38KB)

* Here's another view of Harner's.  The apples and corn they grow here are quite good. * 612 x 408 * (33KB)

* Fields of apple trees, with the mountains in the background. State College lies in a valley (named Happy Valley, which in itself is a humorous story) amongst the Appalachian mountains - the ones pictured here are the Tusseys. * 612 x 408 * (28KB)
